In South Africa, rescue teams are currently looking for survivors following the collapse of a five-storey building that was under construction.
This tragedy resulted in the deaths of five individuals and has left around 50 people trapped in the rubble. Authorities in George, located in the Western Cape province, have reported that 24 individuals have been rescued from the rubble and transported to the hospital, Monday afternoon saw the collapse of the building with 75 crew members present at the site.
The authorities are currently looking into the reason behind the incident that occurred in the coastal city. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the location following the collapse of the building at 14:09 local time (12:09 GMT).
Two out of the 22 individuals rescued from the crash site succumbed to their injuries. Three more fatalities were confirmed at a later time. Over 100 rescuers, along with sniffer dogs, spent the night searching for people trapped in the building. The operation is being aided by the use of heavy lifting equipment.
Authorities stated that they had successfully managed to make contact with some individuals trapped under the debris.
Pictures have surfaced displaying a construction site that has been completely leveled, with pieces of the building’s roof scattered on top of the debris.
Local councilor Theresa Jeyi stated that she witnessed a man working when suddenly the building collapsed, leaving her traumatized and feeling very saddened.
George Mayor Ald Van Wyk expressed his sympathy for the families and individuals impacted who are still hoping for updates on their loved ones.
