Africa has been home to some of the most iconic athletes in global sports history. From football to athletics and basketball, these athletes not only set records but also inspired generations by achieving greatness on the world stage.

Here are 10 legendary African sportsmen and women whose accomplishments have earned them a place among the greatest in their respective fields:

Samuel Eto’o – Football (Cameroon)


Samuel Eto’o – Football (Cameroon)
Samuel Eto’o is one of the most celebrated football legends from Cameroon. He helped secure the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal at the Sydney 2000 Games and represented Cameroon in four FIFA World Cups and six Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, winning two continental titles (2000, 2002). Eto’o retired as the all-time leading scorer in AFCON history with 18 goals and holds the record for Cameroon’s top scorer, with 56 goals in 118 appearances.

At the club level, Eto’o achieved legendary status by winning the UEFA Champions League twice with Barcelona and once with Inter Milan, scoring crucial goals in the finals for both teams.

George Weah – Football(Liberia)


George Weah is often regarded as one of the most influential African footballers in history, paving the way for many African talents in European football. His exceptional skills and prolific scoring earned him the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 1995, making him the first African to receive this honor. That year, he also won the FIFA World Player of the Year and African Footballer of the Year titles.

Weah’s successful career included stints at prominent clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Chelsea, and Manchester City, solidifying his legacy as a footballing great.

Perpetua Nkwocha- (Football)


Perpetua Nkwocha is a trailblazer in African women’s football, representing Nigeria in eight African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) tournaments and winning a record six titles. She was the top scorer in three editions, including a remarkable nine-goal performance in one tournament.

A three-time Olympian and four-time African Footballer of the Year, Nkwocha played in four FIFA Women’s World Cups and remains a symbol of excellence for female athletes in Africa.

Abebe Bikila- Athletics (Ethiopia)


Abebe Bikila was the first Black African to win an Olympic gold medal, achieving this in the marathon at the 1960 Rome Olympics while running barefoot. He successfully defended his title at the 1964 Tokyo Games, breaking his own world record and becoming the first man to win two Olympic marathons. Bikila’s remarkable performances inspired a legacy of excellence in Ethiopian and Kenyan athletics.

Kipchoge Keino -Atheltics (Kenya)


Kipchoge Keino is a pioneer in middle- and long-distance running from Kenya. At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, he overcame gallstones and famously ran 3 km to the stadium when stuck in traffic, ultimately winning gold in the 1500m with the largest margin in history. Additionally, he earned silver in the 5000m and gold in the 3000m steeplechase at the 1972 Munich Games. Keino’s resilience and achievements have solidified his place as a legend in athletics.

Derartu Tulu- Athletics (Ethiopia)


Derartu Tulu made history as the first woman from sub-Saharan Africa to win an Olympic gold medal, triumphing in the 10,000m at the 1992 Barcelona Games. She reclaimed her title at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and became a world champion in 2001, paving the way for future generations of African female long-distance runners.

Nawal El Moutawakel – Athletics (Morocco)


Nawal El Moutawakel broke barriers when she won the 400m hurdles at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, becoming the first Arab, African, and Muslim woman to claim Olympic gold. Her victory marked a turning point for Moroccan and Arab women in sports, inspiring countless others to pursue athletics at the highest level.

Eliud Kipchoge – Athletics (Kenya)


Eliud Kipchoge is considered one of the greatest marathon runners of all time. A two-time Olympic marathon champion (2016, 2020), Kipchoge holds the world record and famously became the first man to complete a marathon in under two hours in an unofficial race in Vienna. His extraordinary consistency and speed have established him as a global icon in athletics.

Jacques Kallis -Cricket (South Africa)


Jacques Kallis is widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time. The South African all-rounder is unique in being the only player in history to score over 10,000 runs and take more than 250 wickets in both Test and One-Day International formats. Kallis’s effortless batting and bowling earned him numerous accolades, including the ICC Player of the Year award in 2005.

Mwadi Mabika -Basketball (DR Congo)



Mwadi Mabika is a basketball pioneer from the Democratic Republic of Congo and the first African player to compete in the WNBA. She has had a significant impact on the growth of basketball in Africa and serves as an inspiration for future generations of athletes.
