According to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Johann Rupert, the Chairman and CEO of Richemont, has surpassed Aliko Dangote as the richest person in Africa. Rupert’s net worth has increased by $1.9 billion to $14.3 billion, placing him 147th globally, while Dangote’s fortune has decreased by $1.7 billion to $13.4 billion.
Rupert’s wealth is attributed to his control of Richemont, a luxury goods firm that owns brands like Cartier and Montblanc, as well as his significant investments in South Africa.
On the other hand, Dangote’s wealth has been impacted by Nigeria’s challenging economic environment, including high inflation and a sharp fall in the value of the naira.
The Bloomberg index also ranks Nicky Oppenheimer, Nassef Sawiris, and Natie Kirsh among the top five African billionaires, with net worths of $11.3 billion, $9.48 billion, and $9.22 billion, respectively.
The ranking monitors daily changes in the net worth of the world’s wealthiest individuals, and the title of Africa’s richest person may continue to change hands as market conditions fluctuate.
