Nigeria Protests: Demonstrators Demand Change Amidst Economic Hardship

  • Protests Erupt Across Nigeria: Hundreds of Nigerians have taken to the streets to protest against the rising cost of living, fuel prices and devalued currency . The demonstrations, which began on August 1, 2024, are expected to continue for 10 days .
  • Economic Woes: The protests come as Nigeria struggles with soaring inflation (40% food inflation) and a sharply devalued naira currency . The economic hardship has been exacerbated by the removal of a state subsidy on petroleum products, which has led to a tripling of fuel prices .
  • Government Response: The government has announced some measures to ease the economic pain, including delivering grain to states across the country and aid to the most needy . However, protesters are demanding more concrete actions to address the economic crisis.
  • Security Forces Crack Down: Security forces have been deployed to protest sites, and there have been reports of tear gas being used to disperse crowds . The police have also blocked roads leading to protest sites, including Eagle Square in Abuja .
  • Protest Demands: The protesters are demanding :
    • Reversal of the fuel price hike
    • Restoration of affordable electricity tariffs
    • Reduction of import duties to their previous rates
    • Reversal of hikes in tertiary education fees
    • Full transparency and accountability in governance
    • Public disclosure and reduction of public officials’ salaries and allowances
    • Emergency fund to support SMEs
