A devastating incident occurred in Jos, Nigeria, on Friday morning when a school building collapsed, trapping students under the rubble. Saint Academy, a school with over 1,000 pupils, caved in during class hours, resulting in the deaths of 22 children and injuring more than 130.

Rescue efforts were swift, with volunteers, police, and emergency services working together to rescue those trapped. Excavators, hammers, and bare hands were used to break through the concrete and twisted iron rods to reach the students. The rescue operation continued late into the night, with many students still hospitalized.

The cause of the collapse is unknown, but residents attribute it to three days of heavy rainfall in Plateau state. The incident has left the community in shock, with many parents and residents gathering at the scene to search for their loved ones.

Survivors like Wulliya Ibrahim, who was injured in the collapse, recounted the terrifying experience. “I had just entered the classroom when I heard a sound, and the next thing I knew, I was in the hospital,” he said.

Unicef Nigeria representative Cristian Munduate expressed condolences to the families affected, saying, “Children full of dreams were writing exams when the school building collapsed. It’s a devastating loss of young lives.”

This tragic incident highlights the issue of building collapses in Nigeria, which have become all too common in recent years. Poor workmanship, substandard materials, and corruption are often cited as the causes of these disasters. In 2021, a similar incident in Lagos resulted in the deaths of at least 45 people.

The Plateau state government has promised to investigate the incident and take measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. For now, the community mourns the loss of young lives and prays for the speedy recovery of those injured.
