Brenda Biya, the 26-year-old daughter of Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, has sparked mixed reactions in the country with an Instagram post showing her kissing a Brazilian model, Layyons Valença. The image, accompanied by a love heart emoji and the caption “I’m crazy about you & I want the world to know,” has been praised by some as a bold move for LGBTQ+ rights in a country where same-sex relationships are criminalized. However, others have responded with homophobic comments.
As a musician based abroad, Brenda Biya has not explicitly stated her sexuality but has shared articles and messages supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Her post has sparked a conversation about social change and taboos in Cameroon, with human rights lawyer Alice Nkom calling her a “model of courage” sending an important universal message of love.
However, the post has also highlighted the harsh reality that anti-LGBT laws in Cameroon disproportionately target the poor, and wealth and connections can create a shield for some while others face severe consequences. Transgender activist Shakiro, who was forced to seek asylum in Belgium after being convicted of “attempted homosexuality” in Cameroon, praised Biya’s post as a potential “turning point” for the LGBTQ+ community but noted that coming out may be a privilege only enjoyed by a select few in the country.
Despite the mixed reactions, Brenda Biya’s post has brought attention to the struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Cameroon, where same-sex acts or relationships can lead to up to five years in jail. Human rights groups have long criticized Cameroon’s strict laws, and the government’s silence on the matter has been notable. As the daughter of one of Africa’s longest-ruling leaders, Brenda Biya’s actions may be a sign of changing times, but for now, the country remains deeply divided on issues of sexuality and love.
