Kenyan radio host and reggae DJ Mary Njambi Koikai, popularly known as Jahmby Koikai, passed away on June 1, 2024, at the age of 38, due to complications from endometriosis. Despite her struggles with the debilitating condition, Koikai remained dedicated to raising awareness about endometriosis and advocating for better healthcare for women.
Koikai’s journey with endometriosis began at the age of 13, but it took 17 years to receive a proper diagnosis due to a lack of specialized facilities in Kenya. She suffered from severe pain, fatigue, and heavy periods, which affected her schooling, relationships, and work. In 2015, her lung collapsed due to thoracic endometriosis, a rare manifestation of the disease, and she underwent several surgeries in the US.
Despite her struggles, Koikai remained strong and continued to share her story, becoming the face of endometriosis awareness in Kenya. Her bravery and resilience inspired many, including comedian Senje, who also suffers from the condition. Koikai’s efforts led to increased awareness and understanding of endometriosis, and her legacy will continue to inspire and educate others.
Endometriosis affects an estimated 10% of women and girls of reproductive age globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). While there is no known cure, early diagnosis and effective treatment can help manage symptoms. Koikai’s story highlights the importance of raising awareness and improving access to healthcare for women suffering from endometriosis.
In her final days, Koikai continued to advocate for better healthcare, calling on President William Ruto to improve access to health services for millions of women battling endometriosis in silence. Her life and legacy serve as a testament to the power of resilience and the impact one person can have in creating change.
