Migrant workers in Lebanon face dire circumstances due to the country’s “kafala” or sponsorship system, which has been likened to modern-day slavery. Under this system, migrants are excluded from protections afforded to workers under Lebanon’s national labor law. They are unable to seek legal recourse for abuses, leading to rampant exploitation and mistreatment .
There have been dire consequences of the system causing death of migrants as farback as 2017 either as suicide or failed escape attempt.
They often also require diplomatic Intervention to escape abusive employers and to defend themselves in court,and migrants workers and often maltreated.
Refusal of Shelter
Migrant workers are denied access to public shelters, including schools and churches, due to lack of documentation.
Many have been forced to sleep outdoors, exposed to heavy rain and bombings.
Local organizations and nonprofits struggle to provide shelter and aid.
There is urgent need for Food, medicine, and clothing for displaced and traumatized migrants, Official arrangements for migrant shelter and support and International aid and recognition of migrant workers’ rights.
The situation is critical, with thousands displaced and many more struggling to survive. The international community must acknowledge the plight of migrant workers in Lebanon and work towards providing them with the protection and support they deserve.
