In a national broadcast marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day on October 1, President Bola Tinubu emphasized the urgent need for reform in the country to avoid stagnation and potential collapse. Reflecting on the challenges faced since his administration took office 16 months ago, he underscored the critical juncture at which Nigeria currently stands.
President Tinubu lamented the nation’s precarious position, attributing it to past mistakes and missed opportunities. He urged Nigerians to learn from these errors and not allow them to hinder the country’s progress into the future.
“Our country is at a dizzying crossroads, where we must choose between reform for progress and prosperity or the peril of business-as-usual leading to collapse,” Tinubu stated. He highlighted the necessity for reforming the political economy and defense architecture, stating that without addressing fiscal misalignments, Nigeria would face dire consequences.
Under his leadership, significant economic reforms have been initiated, resulting in over $30 billion in foreign direct investments within the last year. The President reported that his administration inherited a foreign reserve of over $33 billion and has successfully addressed a forex backlog of $7 billion while reducing the debt service ratio from 97% to 68%. Currently, the nation’s foreign reserves stand at $37 billion, enabling the government to meet its financial obligations.
Tinubu announced the approval of the Economic Stabilization Bills by the Federal Executive Council, aimed at enhancing the business environment, stimulating investment, and easing tax burdens. He also revealed plans for the ministerial approval of the ExxonMobil-Seplat divestment, which is expected to invigorate the oil and gas sector.
In his address, the President commended the Central Bank of Nigeria for its effective monetary policy, which has stabilized the foreign exchange market. He announced plans for a mass transit initiative using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), aiming to provide affordable transportation options while easing public transportation costs.
On local government autonomy, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing the Supreme Court judgment regarding financial independence for local governments. He acknowledged the impact of previous mistakes on Nigeria’s current challenges and urged the nation to learn from the past to realize its potential as one of the greatest nations on earth.
Addressing the rising cost of living, particularly food prices, Tinubu recognized the shared global challenges but assured Nigerians of ongoing measures to alleviate economic hardships. He praised several state governors for embracing agricultural programs aimed at boosting food production and announced a comprehensive plan to enhance agricultural output in the upcoming farming cycle.
In the realm of security, President Tinubu reported progress in the fight against terrorism, citing the elimination of over 300 Boko Haram and bandit commanders within a year. He expressed hope that restoring peace to affected communities would lead to increased food production and lower costs.
The President also addressed the impact of recent natural disasters, promising support for affected victims and announcing the establishment of a Disaster Relief Fund to respond effectively to emergencies.
Looking to the future, Tinubu announced a 30-day National Youth Conference aimed at empowering young Nigerians, who constitute over 60% of the population, to address their unique challenges and opportunities. He highlighted various youth-focused programs, including the Technical Talents initiative and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, aimed at enhancing job creation and educational opportunities.
