A devastating accident occurred in the central Nigerian state of Niger on Sunday, resulting in the loss of at least 48 lives. A fuel tanker collided with a lorry carrying passengers and cattle, triggering a massive explosion that engulfed both vehicles.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency reported that the collision happened at approximately 00:30 local time (01:30 GMT) and dispatched response teams to manage the situation. Unfortunately, several other vehicles were also caught up in the explosion, exacerbating the tragedy.
Footage from the scene shows the two vehicles completely burnt out, with dead cattle scattered around. Emergency rescue workers are working to recover bodies and dead animals still trapped inside the vehicle.
A mass burial is being held for the victims, with Governor Umaru Bago expressing his condolences to the families affected by the incident. He described the event as “unfortunate” and acknowledged the pain it has caused.
This tragic incident highlights the risks associated with fuel tanker explosions and accidents in Nigeria, often caused by the poor condition of roads. The country has witnessed numerous similar incidents, resulting in significant loss of life and property.
