Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has been injured in a confrontation with a policeman in uniform, his personal assistant Najja Ssenyonjo has confirmed to the BBC. The incident occurred while Bobi Wine was on his way to visit his lawyers in Bulindo, approximately 20km north of the capital, Kampala.
According to Ssenyonjo, Bobi Wine was believed to have been shot in the leg and was receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital. However, the police have disputed this account, stating that Bobi Wine stumbled while getting into his vehicle and sustained injuries during an altercation with police.
Footage shared on social media by journalist Solomon Serwanjja shows Bobi Wine being helped from a building with a bleeding injury on his left shin. Ssenyonjo told the BBC that the opposition leader’s team heard bullet sounds during the scuffle, but it’s up to doctors to confirm the nature of the injury.
The police claim that Bobi Wine had attended an event in Bulindo and insisted on proceeding with a procession despite their guidance against it. This led to a police intervention, resulting in an altercation and Bobi Wine’s injuries.
Bobi Wine, a pop star-turned-politician, has been a vocal critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s government and has faced numerous arrests and beatings. His injury has sparked concerns about the safety of political opponents in Uganda, where the security forces have a history of pursuing those who challenge the president’s rule.
