The heinous rape and murder of 7-year-old Heaven Awot in Ethiopia has ignited widespread outrage and demands for justice. Heaven was brutally assaulted, mutilated, and killed by her mother’s landlord, Getnet Baye, in August last year in Bahir Dar, Amhara region. Getnet was sentenced to 25 years in prison, but many feel the sentence is too lenient.

The Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association has stated that the sentencing was “very light” and that the murder alone should have been enough to warrant a life sentence or death penalty. Senior government officials, including the Minister for Women and Social Affairs, have joined the criticism, calling the crimes “inhumane”.

Heaven was attacked while her mother was at work and her aunt was babysitting. Her aunt believes Getnet snatched her away while she was using the bathroom. Heaven’s mutilated body was found in front of her home with clear marks of strangulation.

In the following months, Heaven’s mother faced added ordeals, including going into hiding after Getnet escaped from custody and came looking for her with a gun. She feels the justice system failed her and is concerned about Getnet winning his appeal.
