A devastating fire at a military ammunition depot in Chad’s capital, N’Djamena, has triggered a series of explosions, resulting in an unknown number of casualties and injuries. The fire broke out in the Goudji district late on Tuesday, causing “huge explosions” and widespread damage.
Eyewitness Accounts
Residents in the area described the terrifying experience, with loud blasts shaking their homes and artillery flying overhead. “Our house was shaking as if someone were shooting at us,” said Moustapha Adoum Mahamat, a resident who witnessed the incident. “Then we saw a big fire at the military camp and smoke and things exploding in the air. We could see artillery fly over us.”
Casualties and Damage
Although the exact number of casualties is unknown, President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno confirmed that people had been killed and wounded in the blaze. A resident reported seeing three injured people on the street, with two of them rushed to hospital on motorbikes. Another resident said his neighbor, a shopkeeper, was killed after being hit by a shell.
Investigation Promised
President Deby has promised to open an investigation into the fire, which caused “human and material damage.” The cause of the fire is not yet clear, but the government has urged residents to remain calm.

Foreign Affairs Minister Koulamallah Abderaman wrote in a statement on Facebook, “Huge explosions at the ammunition depot in Goudji district.” President Deby wrote on Facebook, “Peace to the souls of the victims, sincere condolences to the grieving families and a speedy recovery to the wounded.”
