Formula 1 has seen a surge in popularity in Africa, with a growing number of fans eager to attend races on the continent. Despite being the only continent without an F1 race, Africa has a large and dedicated fan base. Kenyan social media influencer Joy Jeptoo, who spent thousands of dollars to attend the season opener in Bahrain and the final race in Abu Dhabi, is among those calling for an F1 race in Africa.
The Middle East has become a popular destination for African F1 fans, with four races held in the region each year. However, fans are keen to have a race on their own continent. In Kenya, Paddock Experience, one of the largest F1 communities, has been hosting viewing parties since 2021, with up to 1,400 fans attending each event.
The growth of F1 in Africa can be attributed to the “Netflix effect,” with the popular docuseries “Drive to Survive” introducing the sport to a new audience. The Covid pandemic also played a role, with fans turning to streaming services to watch races during lockdowns.
Female fans are also on the rise in Africa, with women like Baaba Jenkins and Queendela Adu-Poku taking on a more active role in the sport. Despite facing hostility from some male fans, they are determined to share their love for F1 and grow the representation of Africans in the sport.
Africa has a rich history in F1, with the Kyalami circuit in South Africa hosting multiple races between 1967 and 1993. Lewis Hamilton, the sport’s most successful and only black driver, has been vocal about the need for F1 to return to Africa.
While there have been reports of F1 considering a return to Morocco or potentially racing in Rwanda or Zanzibar, the Kyalami circuit is seen as the obvious venue choice. However, negotiations have been hampered by political issues, with the mooted attendance of Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit in South Africa and the docking of a Russian ship at a naval base causing concerns.
Despite the challenges, fans remain hopeful that F1 will return to Africa soon. With a growing fan base and a rich history in the sport, it’s clear that Africa is ready for an F1 race.
