New York Governor Kathy Hochul Sorry for Comment About Black Children and Computers
New York Governor Kathy Hochul regretted saying that Black children in the Bronx don’t know what a computer is. She made this comment while speaking at a business conference in California about helping low-income communities access new technologies like artificial intelligence.
Hochul said, “Right now, we have young Black kids in the Bronx who don’t even know what the word computer means.” But she quickly faced criticism from other politicians, including Assemblywoman Amanda Septimo from the Bronx, who called the comment “harmful” and “misinformed”.
Later, Hochul apologized, saying, “I misspoke and I regret it. Of course, Black children in the Bronx know what computers are. The problem is they often lack access to technology, which makes it hard for them to get good-paying jobs in new industries like AI.”
Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie defended Hochul, saying, “Though her words were hurtful, I believe she wants all students to succeed.”
Hochul’s goal is to help communities of color access new technologies and address social inequality. She has been working to increase economic opportunities since taking office and will continue to fight for every New Yorker to have a chance at a good-paying job.
