Nelson Mandela’s daughter expressed her gratitude to a sculptor who located her father and made a bust of him.
“Makaziwe “Maki” Mandela-Amuah expressed her gratitude to Homerton College, Cambridge for agreeing to showcase the model.” Former student Jo Standeven expressed that creating the bust presented a challenge, but also proved to be a positive experience, attributed to the subject’s remarkable personality.
During his visit to Essex University in 1996, she mentioned that she got very near to him and created drawings of the anti-apartheid activist.
Makaziwe Mandela, also known as Maki, believes that the example set by her father will serve as a reminder to everyone that there is goodness within us all. Ms. Mandela-Amuah expressed her happiness over the fact that even after 14 years of her father’s death, people globally still have a positive memory of him for his dedication to justice, peace, freedom, and advocating for a more diverse and inclusive society.
She expressed her hope that those looking at the bust would be reminded of the goodness in everyone and that it is our duty to make the world peaceful and harmonious by contributing.
Ms Standeven, a former student of Homerton College in the 1950s, has generously donated the bust to the college. She narrated how she followed Mr. Mandela as he arrived at Essex University for an event. “He was in his seventies.
We hurried across the grass as he emerged from the building and was being escorted to another.” I approached him closely and made several sketches. Afterwards, I kept some black and white photographs from the local newspapers.
Lord Simon Woolley worked with sculptor Jo Standeven to create a bust of Nelson Mandela. Standeven made the sculpture based on sketches of Mandela. Principal Lord Simon Woolley expressed his delight that college members and visitors could see the bust of Mandela, whom he described as a global civil rights icon.
“He expressed hope that this will motivate and inspire all of our students, regardless of race, to learn about him, understand his principles, and strive to achieve a better world,” he stated.
