Health behaviours are defined as activities that affect either health status or disease risk. They can be divided into 2 categories: risky behaviours and health-promoting behaviours.

Common health issues increasingly affecting young people include mental health disorders, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic lung disorders, and various cancers.

  1. Mental Health Disorders:
Youth are at risk for mental illnesses due to negative lifestyle factors like smoking, substance misuse, poor diet, and metabolic issues. These can lead to depression, anxiety, and behavioural problems, with suicide being a significant concern.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes:
Obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, which is becoming more prevalent among young people due to sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits. Regular testing is important, even for those without symptoms.
  3. High Blood Pressure:
More adolescents are developing high blood pressure, which can lead to serious health issues later in life if left untreated. Even seemingly healthy young adults can have high blood pressure, making monitoring crucial.
  4. Heart Disease:
Heart disease is no longer exclusive to older adults, with younger individuals increasingly affected due to factors like obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking.
  5. Chronic Lung Disorders:
Respiratory issues like asthma are common among young people, affecting their daily functioning and potentially leading to severe complications. Smoking and genetic factors play a role in the development of these disorders.
  6. Cancers:
Certain cancers, such as lymphomas and thyroid cancer, are more frequently diagnosed in teens and young adults. Understanding the biological characteristics of these cancers is crucial for developing effective treatments.

To take control of their health, young people can:

  • Quit smoking
  • Manage medical conditions
  • Make healthy dietary choices
  • Stay physically active
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Seek mental health support when needed.
