The death of a Zimbabwean tour guide in South Africa’s Gondwana Private Game Reserve, where an elephant was charging, has left conservationists in mourning.
The tragedy occurred on Sunday night as 36-year-old David Kandela was guiding a party of tourists, according to a statement from the reserve that was cited by local media.
It further stated that the tragedy happened as one of Gondwana’s elephant herds was passing through the Eco Camp, which is a tent.
Just before the fatal tragedy, David came upon the lone surviving elephant when the herd was almost through the camp,” the statement continued.
According to other tour guides and tour operators, Mr. Kandela is a knowledgeable guide who is quite passionate about what he does.
While such events are uncommon, it is reported that large numbers of people, particularly in locations not intended for safari tourists, can easily annoy elephants.
In southern Africa, elephants are a popular tourist attraction.
