“Everything you can imagine, I’m able to create it.”
Meet Laetitia Ky, an artist from Abidjan, Ivory Coast, who uses her hair to create sculptures.
“I’m not only trying to create beautiful shapes; I’m trying to create beautiful shapes with a meaning.”
Her creations are often used as a way to tackle taboos such as body image or sexual politics.
But Laetitia did not always have the best relationship with her hair or herself.
As a teenager, she struggled with an eating disorder and she was bullied at school.
But on her road to recovery she discovered stories about ancestral African hair, which helped her to love her roots and herself.
